Begbie condemns an American to death for murder. The convicted man's American lawyer informs the judge that he will appeal. Begbie replies, "You are fully within your rights to do so and I will outline for you the procedures. First, you will make your appeal in writing and submit it to me for approval. Then I will forward it to the Supreme Court in Ottawa for review. They will then communicate their findings to me and you will be informed of their position. But all of this is purely academic, because your client will be hanged tomorrow morning at 9 a.m."
