In March 1859 Begbie sets off on his first circuit from New Westminster, travelling a route along which he holds court. Begbie reads the Anglican Evening Prayer service by campfire, singing hymns before going to his tent. In 1865 he rides about 3,500 miles to hold court up the Fraser and in the Cariboo. Fond of the outdoor life, he lives off the country, setting up his tent, shooting game, catching fish, and baking bread.
